As digital products become more complex, the responsibility of designers and product managers is to simplify. In our recent redesign of a fundraiser experience, we uncovered a set of actionable UI and UX principles that can help teams build stronger interfaces for data-heavy or action-driven applications. These lessons are directly relevant to teams trying to deliver clarity in constrained environments, especially on mobile.
Understand the User’s Context
Users access most interfaces on mobile devices, often while moving through other activities. This requires strict prioritization of what appears above the fold. Our redesign focused on presenting only the most essential information at first glance. Reducing initial friction dramatically increases the likelihood that users will engage with the content that follows.
Optimize Typography and Spacing
Minor typographic adjustments had meaningful impact. By reducing the spacing between key elements and tightening the font hierarchy, we made space for additional insights without increasing scroll length or visual clutter. Typography is often overlooked, yet it is the most powerful tool for creating hierarchy and clarity.
Lean Into Familiar Visual Cues
We introduced donor photos, icons, and recognizable markers to build intuitive recognition. The human brain processes familiar imagery faster than text. For product teams, using familiar cues is an effective way to create comfort and orientation without additional explanation.
Design for Progressive Disclosure
We implemented tooltips for complex metrics, collapsible leaderboards, and expandable sections in order to maintain a clean baseline interface. This allows advanced users to explore detail without forcing casual users to interpret information they may not need. Progressive disclosure is essential in data-dense interfaces.
Use Contrast and Pattern Variation to Guide Attention
Visual uniformity can unintentionally cause users to skip over critical information. We created intentional variation between sections using color, borders, and layout to highlight priority items such as action areas. Pattern-breaking is a strategic tool for directing the user’s eye.
Employ Motion Thoughtfully
Subtle animations and slide-out interactions were added to create a sense of responsiveness. Motion should reinforce hierarchy, not draw attention away from content. A restrained approach enhances usability, especially in professional or analytical environments.
Integrate AI Into the Workflow Without Losing Control
AI proved valuable in generating layout ideas and initial structures, but human review was essential to maintain consistency, refine spacing, and ensure user comprehension. Designers and PMs benefit most when AI is used as a fast ideation tool rather than a final decision maker.
Protect Quality Through Thoughtful Prioritization
We chose not to continue work on the rewards page until the conceptual direction solidified. Designers and PMs should treat sequence and timing as design tools in their own right. Rushing unclear features leads to unnecessary churn.
Build Shared Mental Models Within the Team
A critical part of the process involved explaining the rationale behind UX decisions, not just handing off tasks. When cross-functional partners understand the reasoning, execution becomes more consistent and aligned. Strong products emerge from teams that share a common design philosophy.
Design for Omnichannel Durability
The fundraiser summary page was crafted to perform well inside the product, within email previews, and across messaging platforms. Designing for multiple contexts ensures reliability and consistency no matter where the user encounters the content.
